Huskies are first to offer Joyner

Washington became the first school to extend an offer to super-sophomore RB Austin Joyner from Marysville (Wa.) Pilchuck who helped lead the Tomahawks to the state playoffs this season. Dawgman.com caught up with the talented tailback shortly after he had gotten out of school for the day...

"My coach got a call from the (Washington) coaches and told him they wanted me to come down," Joyner said. "So when I came down I felt like there was a chance I was going to get the offer and when I did it was pretty special.

"I met with all of the coaches and talked to the coordinators and coach (Steve) Sarkisian too. It was overall a really good visit for me."

Joyner rushed for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns this season for the Tomahawks while helping to lead them to the playoffs, but he also was a stud on the defensive side of the ball as well.

"The coaches there really weren't sure where they wanted me at," Joyner said with a chuckle. "They sorta said they were going to fight over which side of the ball I would play on which was pretty funny."

Joyner noted that, at this point, he doesn't have a preference on which side of the ball he plays on and noted "I still have a couple of years to decide on something like that."

So with Washington offering, did that make an impression on Joyner?

"It was a big impression because it was my first offer," Joyner said. "The fact that they are sorta the hometown school really doesn't play into it for me.

"They are playing really well right now though and I think it's pretty cool having an offer from them so early in the process for me."

Joyner noted he didn't feel like any other schools are close to offering, but said that Washington State, Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Arizona and "a bunch of other schools" are after him as well.

Joyner was named to the Seattle Times All-Area team recently and has received All-League honors for his efforts as well.

We will continue to keep tabs on Joyner and will update news as it happens with him during the offseason.
